Smaller checkpoints with fast recovery

Can state organization and checkpoint encoding reduce persistent bytes without worsening foreground latency or recovery time?

The question

Can state organization and checkpoint encoding reduce persistent bytes without worsening foreground latency or recovery time?

This is a proposed research direction. No novel algorithm, completed benchmark or performance gain is claimed.

Why it matters

Stream processors and embedded storage systems could improve resilience at lower storage and network cost.

Search space

Delta encoding, chunk reuse, upload scheduling and snapshot/changelog combinations.

What would count as progress?

  • Recovered-state equality under failures
  • checkpoint bytes
  • foreground p99 latency
  • recovery time
  • retained storage.

A useful result improves a measured trade-off against strong baselines on held-out workloads, with reproducible code and documented limitations.

Baselines and boundaries

Compare full snapshots, incremental snapshots and changelog approaches. Inject failures at multiple phases; include dependency retention, metadata and recovery downloads in total cost.

Where you could contribute

Help define representative, legally shareable workloads; critique the correctness contract; implement baselines; propose candidates; or reproduce measurements. Negative results and failure cases are useful contributions.
